Iran holds mourning rituals on first day of Muharram

Iranians hold religious ceremonies to mark the beginning of the mourning month of Muharram.

Iranians have held religious ceremonies at the beginning of the mourning month of Muharram, commemorating the martyrdom of the third Shia Imam, Imam Hussain (AS) in the Islamic lunar month. 

Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions were martyred in the Battle of Karbala. They fought against tyranny and injustice.

Muslims all over the world gather to mourn the martyrdom anniversary of their Imam who is the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Iranians hold rituals for 40 days in mosques and other venues. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the mourning ceremonies are held by the precise observation of health protocols.
